Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the incidence of hypocalcemia in epileptic children receiving anticonvulsant drugs. Patients and Methods: The study included 50 children receiving antiepileptic drugs for a mean duration of 1.94 years (range 1-6 years). There were 26 girls (52%), 24 boys (48%), with a mean age of 8±3.38 years (range 2-14 years). Anticonvulsant drugs included carbamazepine (n=26, 52%), valproate (n=14, 28%), barbeksaklon (n=8, 16%), and phenobarbital (n=2.4%). Serum calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase levels were measured to evaluate the effect of anticonvulsant drugs on vitamin D metabolism. Right hand-wrist radiographs were obtained. Results: EEG recordings were normal in 31 patients (62%), whereas 19 children (38%) exhibited abnormal EEGs. Serum calcium, alkaline phosphatase, and phosphorus levels were in normal ranges, the mean values being 9.29 ± 0.42 mg/dl, 266.1 ± 97.03 IU/L, and 4.68±1.13 mg/dl respectively. No significant relationship was found between the duration of use of the drugs and serum calcium levels (p>0.05). Radiographs of the hand and the wrist did not suggest any findings in favor of osteopenia. Conclusion: Our data suggest that the use of anticonvulsant drugs in children does not significantly alter vitamin D metabolism.
