Abstract

Various techniques such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy are available for the treatment of cancer in the oral cavity, head and neck area. All malignant tumor cells can be destroyed by ionizing radiation. Unfortunately, the normal cells which surround the tumor cells are also susceptible to damage by this irradiation. Irradiation of the oral cavity can produce very distressing symptoms such as soreness of the mucous membranes involved, dryness of the mouth, and loss of taste. Also chemotherapy can produce side effects. We must know about the treatments of this harmful effects on the tissues of the oral cavity, head and neck and help in patients receiving radiotherapy and chemotherapy for the treatments of this effects.

Özet

Oral kavitenin ve baş - boyun bölgesindeki kanserlerin tedavisinde cerrahi, radyoterapi, kemoterapi gibi çeşitli teknikler kullanılmaktadır. Malign tümör hücreleri iyonize radyasyon ile yokedilebilmektedir. Maalesef tümör hücrelerinin çevresindeki sağlıklı hücrelerde radyasyondan zarar görmektedir. Oral kaviteye veya baş -boyun bölgesine radyoterapi uygulanması müköz membranın ağrısı, ağız kuruluğu, tat kaybı gibi rahatsız edici semptomlar yaratabilir. Aynı şekilde kemoterapide de yan etkiler oluşmaktadır. Radyoterapinin ve kemoterapinin ağız ve çevre dokulardaki zararlı etkilerini bilmemiz ve bunların etkilerini azaltma yöntemlerini uygulayarak hastalara yardımcı olmamız gerekmektedir.
