Abstract

Recently, non-antimicrobial properties of tetracyclines, such as increasing collagen synthesis and decreasing collagen breakdown have been shown. In this study; the effects of systemic doxycycline (SD) alone and combined with scaling-root planing (SD+SRP) and SRP alone on cli-nical healing and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) hydroxy-proline (Hyp: a marker of collagen) and total protein (TP) levels in chronic periodontitis patients were evaluated. Fifteen patients received only SD treatment in 1 qua-drant of upper jaws and SD+SRP in the contralateral quadrant. Fifteen patients received only SRP treatment. Probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), gin-gival, sulcular bleeding and plaque indices (GI, SBI, PI) were recorded and GCF samples were collected at baseli-ne and 7th week. Hyp and TP levels were biochemically determined The results were statistically analyzed. All treatments significantly reduced clinical parameters and Hyp and TP levels (p
