Abstract

Plasma cell granuloma (PCG) is a rare benign lesion, histologically characterized by an infiltration of polyclonal plasma cells. There are several reports in the literature indicating that this benign lesion may also occur in periodontal tissues. A 32-year-old female was consulted in periodontology clinic for a massive lesion arising from the gingiva associated with acute gingival inflammation. Following the oral examination, measurements of periodontal parameters and radiographic evaluation, the patient was diagnosed as chronic periodontitis. Immunohistochemical analysis by kappa and lambda staining revealed that the plasma cells were polyclonal (reactive) in nature. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis indicated that the mass was a PCG. This case report highlights the need to take biopsies from the unusual lesions to rule out potential neoplasms.
