Abstract

Introduction: Antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), protects against reactive oxygen species (ROS). It is known that non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs scavenge ROS. Purpose:To evaluate the effect of ibuprofen on gingival and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) SOD activity in chronic periodontitis (CP). Material and Methods: Twenty-six CP-patients, 18 periodontally-healthy controls were studied. Patients presented teeth which required periodontal surgery in two quadrants of maxilla (site A, site B). Baseline GCF was collected from sites A and B and gingiva was collected from site A, during surgery. Samplings were repeated 1 week after 6-week- ibuprofen treatment (gingiva, GCF) and postoperative 1, 3 months (GCF) (site B). Controls’ gingivae were obtained after orthodontic tooth extraction. SOD activities were spectrophotometrically determined. Results: Gingival SOD activity was significantly higher in patients than controls, while significantly reduced after ibuprofen (p0.05).

Özet

Giriş: Superoksit dismutaz (SOD) hücreyi reaktif oksijen türlerinden (ROS) koruyan antioksidan bir enzimdir. Non steroid anti-inflamatuar ilaçların ROS’ni baskıladığı belirtilmektedir. Amaç: Kronik periodontitiste (KP) ibuprofen tedavisinin dişeti ve dişeti oluğu sıvısı (DOS) SOD aktivitesine etkisinin araştırılmasıdır. Gereçler ve Yöntem: Yirmialtı KP’li-hasta ve 18 periodontal-sağlıklı-kontrolde üst çenede sağ ve sol kuadrantlarda (A, B bölgeleri) çalışıldı. A ve B bölgelerinden periodontal cerrahi gereken dişlerden başlangıç DOS örnekleri, A bölgesinden cerrahi ile dişeti örnekleri alındı.
