Abstract

Purpose: We investigated the effects of threshold positive expiratory pressure (PEP) therapy on lung function by comparing with flow dependent PEP and active cycle of breathing techniques in stable patients with cystic fibrosis. Materials and methods: Twenty-five patients with clinically stable cystic fibrosis participated in the study. Pulmonary function tests were performed and oxygen saturation was measured. The perception of dyspnea and fatigue were measured using a visual analogue scale. Flow independent PEP using a threshold PEP, flow dependent PEP mask system, and the active cycle of breathing techniques were applied once. Applications were performed in the sitting position for 15 minutes by the patients under the supervision of a physiotherapist. Results: A significant increase was found in FEVı, FEVı/FVC, PEF, and FEF25% after flow independent threshold PEP application (p0.05). Change in pulmonary function did not differ significantly among the treatments (p>0.05). Conclusion: Flow independent threshold PEP improved large and middle airway function. This treatment can be used safely in cystic fibrosis.
