Abstract
SMEs are vital enterprises of any economy. Many factors play a crucial role in the process of development of these enterprises. One of these factors is the international direct investment. International direct investment creates and investment and business atmosphere around a country, region or a city where it brings new technology, technical and administrative staff. This business atmosphere as it influences all agents in the economy will also be able to influence SMEs. On the other hand, population and development levels of a country , region or a city could be a determinant factor for international direct investment’s decision to enter a country, region or a city. In this study, the effects of development levels and population of provinces in Turkey on international direct investment, and the effect of international direct investment on SMEs opening up to foreign markets, on engaging R&D activities, and on institutionalization are analyzed simultaneously by using structural equation modeling. Following this analysis, it was concluded that international direct investment is effected by development levels and population of the city and it is also concluded that international direct investment effects institutionalization and opportunities to export of SMEs of that city.

KOBİ’ler ülke ekonomilerinin can damarı işletmelerdir. Bu işletmelerin gelişmesinde birçok faktörün etkisi olduğu bir gerçektir. Bu etkilerden bir tanesi ise uluslararası doğrudan yatırımlardır. Uluslararası doğrudan yatırımlar bir ülkeye, bölgeye veya şehre beraberinde teknik ve idari personel ile yeni teknoloji getirerek bir yatırım ve iş iklimi yaratmaktadır. Bu iş iklimi ekonomideki bütün ajanları etkilediği gibi KOBİ’leride etkileyebilecektir. Diğer taraftan bir ülkeye, bölgeye veya şehre uluslararası doğrudan yatırımların gelmesinde o ülkenin, bölgenin veya şehrin nüfus ve gelişmişlik düzeyleri belirleyici olabilmektedir. Bu çalışmada uluslararası doğrudan yatırımların Türkiye’de örneklem olarak alınan illerin gelişmişlik ve nüfus değişkenleri tarafından etkilenmesi ile uluslararası doğrudan yatırımların o ildeki KOBİ’lerin yurt dışı pazarlara açılmasına, Ar-Ge faaliyetlerinde bulunmasına ve kurumsallaşmasına olan etkileri eş anlı olarak yapısal eşitlik modeli ile analiz edilmiştir. Yapılan analiz sonucunda uluslararası doğrudan yatırımların yatırım yapacağı ilin gelişmişlik düzeyi ile nüfusundan etkilendiği, uluslararası doğrudan yatırımların ildeki KOBİ’lerin kurumsallaşmasını ve ihracat yapma olanaklarını arttırdığı sonucu bulunmuştur.
