Abstract

This study analyses the use of the concepts of state (devlet), nation (millet), and homeland (vatan) in Kemal Tahir's novel Esir Şehrin İnsanları (1956) through corpus linguistic methods, interpreting the findings within Koselleck's conceptual history framework. The novel's full text (91,976 tokens) served as the target corpus, and Sodom ve Gomore (novel text only, 65,580 tokens), depicting the same period (the occupation of Istanbul, 1919-1922), as the reference corpus; keyness, collocation, and historical dictionary (Şemseddin Sami, 1900; Pakalın, 1971) analyses were applied. Findings show that millet (G² = 39.39; p < .0001) and vatan (G² = 50.20; p < .0001) are strong keywords of the novel, whereas halk, assessed in a preliminary test, was not distinctive (G² = 0.18). The corpus's strongest collocations, "bizim millet" (our nation; t = 3.13) and "vatan uğruna" (for the homeland's sake; t = 2.79), display a critical and ironic semantic prosody. Historical comparison reveals that the concepts carry both older and newer semantic layers simultaneously; 17.0 percent of millet's collocates still reference a religious community. In conclusion, the novel deploys the national conceptual vocabulary intensively while maintaining a critical distance from it, a dual stance measurable through corpus methods. The study offers a replicable method integrating corpus-based analysis with conceptual history.
