Abstract

Leptin released from adipose tissue is thought to have important role in regulating body mass and the energy metabolism. Serum leptin level increases in obese subjects. However, it is not exactly known whether there is a relationship between leptin and DM. in the present study we aimed to investigate the correlation between leptin and calculated basal metabolic rate (BMR), insülin and body mass index (BMİ) in type 2 diabetic patients. A total of 137 individuals, between 40 and 60 of ages, were included in the present study. There were 32 female, 17 male patients who were taking oral antidiabetic drug (OAİ) in the first group, the second group consisted of 25 female, 19 male patients, taking injectable insülin. in the same time 21 female, 23 male individuals were studied as a control group. it was found that there was a strong correlation between serum levels of leptin and BMR in healthy subjects, however, this was diminished in diabetic patients. Serum leptin levels of the females was found to be higher than males (p
