Abstract

Background and Aim: The purpose of this study was todetermine the effect of different root canal filling techniqueson the incidence of crack initiation and propagation at theapical root surface after removal of root canal filling.Materials and Methods: Forty-five teeth were sectionedperpendicular to the long axis at 1 mm from the root apex. Allteeth were instrumented using a Wave One Gold Primary file(WOG Primary). The root canals were filled with the single conetechnique. Root canal fillings were removed using ProTaperUniversal Retreatment files (PTU-R). Further preparation wasperformed with a WaveOne Gold Medium file (WOG Medium). The specimens were then divided into three groups (n=15),and re-obturation of the root canals was performed usingthe following techniques: cold lateral compaction (CLC), singlecone (SC) obturation, and warm vertical compaction (WVC).Images of the apical portion of the roots were recorded afterapical resection (baseline), initial preparation, SC obturation, removal of root canal fillings, further preparation, and finally reobturation.Crack initiation and propagation in the images wererecorded. The Chi-square test and Cochrane’s Q test were usedfor determining statistically significant differences. Results: There was no statistically significant difference incrack initiation and propagation among the three filling methodsused for re-obturation of root canals (p>0.05). Removal of rootcanal fillings with PTU-R files caused significantly more crackinitiation than the other endodontic procedures (p
