Abstract

Background and Aim: Coronavirus infection caused by a pathogen called COVID-19 has become a major public health issue worldwide, starting from March 2020. Due to the nature of dentistry applications, dental health professionals are considered very likely to receive this infection. The present study aims to evaluate the awareness of future dentists on the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects, especially upon pediatric dental clinic, emotional status and point of view changes about the future of the profession. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used for the present study. Our sample consisted of dental interns from all over Turkey, who had undergone pediatric dentistry training were included. A questionnaire was created on Google forms and shared with dentistry students using several on-line platforms. All answers were kept anonymous. Results: In this study, 1101 students (65.6% female and 34.4% male) answered the questionnaire. All participants were between 19-24 years old. More than half of the participants (55.7%) strongly agreed that clinicians were under a higher risk of getting infected in a pediatric dental clinic since children were more likely to be asymptomatic even they were infected. 69% strongly agreed that more protection was required during dental applications, whereas 53.7% strongly agreed that elective dental care should be postponed during the pandemic. 26.8% were highly concerned about the future of the profession. Conclusion: It could be concluded that pandemic widely affected future dentists’ perception and decision making in pediatric dental clinics. Pandemic increased their worries about the future of dentistry.

Katılımcıların %26.8’i mesleğin geleceği ile ilgili şiddetle endişelendiklerini bildirmişlerdir. Sonuç: Pandeminin diş hekimliği öğrencilerinin pedodonti kliniğindeki algı ve karar mekanizmalarını ciddi şekilde etkilemiştir. Ayrıca mesleğin geleceği ile ilgili endişelerini artırmıştır.
