Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is one of the most common rheumatic diseases in population. The purpose of the therapy for the knee OA must include to relief the pain, to prevent the function of joint and to reduce the patients' dependence of daily living activities. Decrease of hyaluronic acid in synovial fluid reduces the physiologic protective functions of it. It is suggested that protective features of synovial fluid can be regained by intraarticular injection of HA. The aim of this study was to investigate the impacts of intraarticular hyaluronic acid therapy in patients' quality of life in knee osteoarthritis. Fiftyfour knee O A patients were included in this study. The patients were assessed in two groups. First group consisted of 27 male (average age: 62.4±2.8 years), and the second group consisted of 27 female patients (average age: 61 ±4 years). A statistically significant difference of NSP parameters has been found before and after treatment. After treatment the number of analgesics that were given to the patients were found to be statistically decreased. As a conclusion, intraarticular injection of HA appeared to be effective in improving patients' quality of life in knee OA.

Her iki grup 27 olgudan oluşmaktaydı.
