Abstract

To asses the accuracy of ultrasonography (US) in differentation of pleural exudates from transudates, fifty-nine patients with pleural effusion due to various causes (28 transudates and 31 exudates) were prospectively examined with US by two radiologists, before histopathologic evaluation. Internal echogenicities of the pleural effusion were graded according to their echogenicities: grade 0, anechoic; grade 1, slight internal echo; grade 2, less echoic than grade 3 and grade 3, has the same echogenicity with the liver paranchyma. Of the 59 patients with pleural effusion, US revealed that 18.6% had grade 0, 38.9% had grade 1, 25.4% had grade 2 and 16.9% had grade 3 echogenecity. In all of the patients with grade 3 internal echogenecity pleural effusion was exudate. Only one of grade 2 pleural effusion was transudate (p
