Abstract

Alexithymia, a difficulty in expressing feelings in words, is not widely studied in migraine patients. Many of the patients complain solely from their head pain although, they frequently suffer depression and anxiety, as well. The trouble of the patients in expressing their anxious and depressive moods may be due to the difficulty in informing the other people, about their emotional states in words. Not keeping in mind such a problem may cause either to overlook severe pathologic situations or overdiagnosis which, may bring out a high cost of unnecessary medication. In the present study, the frequency and presentation of depression, anxiety and alexithymia were searched in 50 migrain patients (migraine attacks ± tension type headache), in regard to 50 healthy controls Sociodemographical psychological and clinical differences between alexithymic and non-alexithymic cases were, also, revised. It is revealed that visual pain scale, depression, anxiety and alexithymia scores of migraine patients were significantly higher than controls. In regard to subgroups, alexithymia scores were significantly higher in patients who has tension type headache in combination with migraine. In addition, TAS and STAI-II scores were significantly higher, also, in the patients with autonomic dysfunction symptoms during the attacks, regardless of subgroup classification.
