Abstract

48 patients diagnosed by FOB between January 1997 and December 1998 were investigated, prospectively. Forceps biopsy, brushing, bronchial lavage and bronchoalveoler lavage (BAL) were performed in all patients during bronchoscopy. In addition post-bronchoscopic sputum was also analyzed. The diagnosis was established by forceps biopsy, BAL and brushing in 45 (%93.7), 1 (%2) and 2 (%4.1) cases respectively. Forceps biopsy, BAL, bronchial lavage, post-bronchoscopic sputum and brushing yielded positive results for malignancy in 93.7%, 16.6%, 27%, 14.5% and 22.9% of cases respectively. Type of the lung cancer was identified in 48 cases. Epidermoid carcinoma, adenocarcinom, small-cell carcinom, large cell carcinoma and mixed type carcinoma (Epidermoid carcinoma + small cell carcinoma) were detected in 25 (52%), 8(16%), 5 (10.4%), 4 (8%) and 2 (4%) cases respectively. Our results suggest that forceps biopsy specimens have the highest diagnostic value in cases with preliminary diagnosis of lung cancer and that other materials including post-bronchoscopic sputums, BAL, brushing, bronchial lavage obtained during bronchoscopy may contribute to the diagnosis.
