Abstract

This study has been carried out to evaluate the clinical application of serum ai.antitrypsin (alpha1AT) and several parameters in patients with asthma and chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) referred to the pulmonary outpatient clinic. Onehundred and thirteen cases (67 COPD, 46 asthma) with mean age 52,59±14,74 years (range 17-85) were prospectively evaluated for disease type, symptoms, pulmonary function tests and smoking status. Serum alpha1-AT levels were determined by nephelometry. The group of patients within the 56-65 age group consisted the 30.1% of the cases. Smokers constituted the 48.7% and patients with COPD constituted 59.3% of the cases. 40.7% of the cases had asthma. The mean level of alpha1-AT was 171.90±50.35mg/dl in asthmatics, whereas in COPD patients it was 174.74±53.48 mg/dl (p>0.05). The mean level of alpha1AT was 172.63±54.55 mg/dl in smokers, whereas in nonsmokers it was 170.19±53.8 mg/dl (p>0.05). Subgroup analysis by smoking status between the COPD and asthma groups showed significant difference (p

Serum alfa1-AT düzeyleri nefelometrik yöntemle ölçüldü. Yaş gruplarına göre hastaların %30.1'i 55-65 yaşları arasındaydı.
