Abstract

In the world and our country, there are plenty of boron reservoir and boron compounds have superior properties. Because of these, many researcher are studing with these compounds. Boronizing being one of the simplest methods used for surface coating have been worked extensively by many researchers. Boronizing is a thermochemical method and when it is compared with the other surface treatment methods, it has good oxidation, corrosion, high wear resistance and hardness. In this study, boronizing treatment has been carried out into the liquid bath consisting of dehydrated borax, calcined boric acid and ferrosilicon at different temperatures and times. The thickness and hardness of coated layers were measured and phases in the layers were determined by XRD methods. It has been demonstrated that, thickness and hardness values of boride layers increased as boronizing temperature and time increased. The thickness of boride layer ranged between 60-200 $mu m$. While original steel hardness is 180 kg/mm2, hardness values of formed layers at 850, 900 and 950°C for 6 hours were obtained 1635, 1789 and 1845 kg/mm2 respectively.
