Abstract

OBJECTIVE: A basic life support and defibrillation course, attended by doctors and nurses, was organized in order to provide the skills of health professionals when witnessing cardiopulmonary arrest to initiate basic life support and resuscitation, if needed, until resuscitation team arrived. The aim of this study is to evaluate the attendants' level of providing skills, and to compare the profession groups (doctors and nurses) and those previously receivedCPRtraining or not.MATERIALS and METHODS: Concordant with the resuscitation guide of European Resuscitation Council published in 2005, in this basic life support and defibrillation course composed of theoretical lectures and practices sensory control, calling for aids, respiration and circulation control, thoracal compression, ventilation and defibrillation practices were performed.Attendants were evaluated for providing skills according to a form of 20 steps.Attendants' professions and histories of resuscitation course were recorded.RESULTS: Hundred and six people; 64 doctors and 27 nurses attended the course. Forty-one attendants (38.7%) performed all steps correctly in order. The correct performance rates of steps were 81.1% for sensory control, calling for aids, respiration and circulation control, 84% for thoracal decompression, 66% for ventilation and 73.6% for defibrillation. There was no difference between the success rates of doctors and nurses. Among the attendants, only 1.9% has a basic life support and defibrillation course in the last year and 33% had no resuscitation course.CONCLUSION: The success of attendants was adequate in the post-course evaluation. The low rate of attending a basic life support course in the last year shows the lack of training on resuscitation training among the healthcare personnel in our hospital. We think that hospital management should provide a continuing education with training equipment and organization support.
