Abstract

The aim of this study was to design an effective course for teaching social issues in social studies education and to reveal the applicability of it. The study, designed as action research from the qualitative research approaches, was carried out in the course of Teaching Social Issues in Social Studies Education, a graduate course of the Department of Social Studies Education, in the 2020-2021 academic year with 6 students. The courses were carried out online with the distance learning method. A total of four themes were discussed: Our social identities, tolerance in society, gender inequality, and being disabled in society. The data were collected through students' reflection papers, interviews, observation recordings, and researcher's notes. Content and descriptive analysis were used in the analysis process. As a result, the course was found to be effective by the students, as it could be said that classroom discussions and debates based on the case studies were effective for students to express their opinions about social problems and to find solutions to them. This effect was observed to be most intense in the third and fourth lessons. This study provides an applicable example model for teaching social issues for teachers and teacher candidates.
