Abstract

Purpose: Preauricular sinus is a congenital abnormality, arising because of disunion of the hillocks of the first and second branchial arches forming the auricle. It is defined as a congenital lesion in which a small skin opening located in front öf the external ear communicates with a subcutaneous network of cysts. Branchial anomalies originated from the first branchial arch constitue less than 1 % of all branchial anomalies. It presents as a small opening in the skin anterior to the insertion of the helix. The tract is usually asymptomatic; however, may sometimes accompany with recurrent wound infections. Case report: It was presentented a preauricular sinus in a 10 year-old girl having wound infection on right preauricular region recurring for two years and the topic was discussed in the light of literature. Conclusion: It was found appropriate to present the case for the purpose of emphasizing that in the back-ground of unhealed wound infections on the face which not respond to the treatment may be a preauricular sinus like in this case.
