Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of multidetector computed tomography (CT) virtual bronchoscopy and to compare it with fiberoptic bronchoscopy in patients diagnosed with tracheobronchial stenosis. Methods: Between April 2003 and April 2004, multidetector CT virtual bronchoscopy and fiberoptic bronchoscopy were performed in 29 patients with tracheobronchial stenosis. CT images were obtained with a multidetector CT scanner using 4x1 mm collimation. Virtual bronchoscopy findings were com¬pared to fiberoptic bronchoscopy findings. Results: Thirty-three of 36 stenoses were detected by virtual bronchoscopy. Virtual bronchoscopic findings were highly sensitive (sensitivity, 92%; specificity, 96%) in revealing tracheobronchial stenosis. Virtual bronchoscopi was found as a highly sensitive method (sensitivity, 92%; specificity, 96%) in detecting tracheobronchial stenosis. Conclusion: Multidetector CT virtual bronchoscopyis a reliable noninvasive method that allows evaluating of tracheobronchial stenosis. However, it should be combined with the interpretation of axial and multiplanar reformatted CT images for evaluation of surrounding structures and optimal spatial orientation.
