Abstract

Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy may be divided into two categories: primary (also called hereditary or idiopathic) and secondary. The primary form, which accounts for approximately 5% of all cases of hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, is also called pachyder-moperiostosis. Secondary hypertrophic osteoarthro-pathy, also called pulmonary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, is secondary to a variety of underlying cardiopulmonary diseases, such as bronchogenic carcinoma, mesothelioma, pulmonary abscess, bronchiectasis, Hodgkin's disease, cyanotic congenital heart disease, cystic fibrosis, etc. Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy was detected in a 60-year-old woman with bronchogenic carcinoma by bone scintigraphy using Tc-99m methylene diphosphonate (MDP). There is increased radiopharmaceutical uptake along the cortical margins of the diaphyses of long bones. We think that bone scintigraphy is useful for detecting hypertrophic osteoarthropathy.
