Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the back pain prevalences, pain related subjective and work related factors and treatment preferences in healthcare workers (HCW) in a university hospital. (Instructors, research assistants and nurses) Material and Methods: The data were collected with the use of a questionnaire from volunteers. In addition to the demographic data, presence and frequency of back pain, subjective and work related risk factors and treatment preferences were questioned. Result: In a total of 268 HCW there were 75 (28.0%) instructors, 93 (34.7%) research assistants, and 100 (37.3%) nurses in the study group. There were 150 women and 118 men. The mean age was 30.4±5.5 (18-52). Lifetime back pain prevalence was 47%, yearly back pain prevalence was 34.3% and chronic back pain prevalence was 16%. Positive family history and smoking were found to be related to an increased risk of back pain. Sex, weight, race, socialstatus, history of pregnancy or sports activities and daily living activities were not found to be related to back pain. The prevalence of back pain in nurses was twice the prevalence of doctors. Most people did not present their complaints to branch doctors but preferred the physical therapy department. The most requested imaging modality was MRI followed by plain X-rays. Conclusion: Back pain is a serious problem among HCW. The nurses even have a greater risk because of hard working conditions. There is still need for proper training and precautions to decrease the prevalence of back pain in HCW.

150fsi bayan, 118'i erkekti.
