Abstract

Objective: Tuberculosis pleurisy develops by delayed type hypersensitivitiy reaction. Plevral CD4 was found to be increased when compared to peripheral blood in different studies. In this study, the role of CD4 and CDS ratios in pleural effusion and peripheral blood was investigated in the dif-ferential diagnosis of pleural effusion. Methods: Eighty eight patients with pleural effusion were included and divided in to four groups (1- Tuberculous pleurisy, 2-Parapneumonic effusion, 3-Malignancy, 4-Transudate). Results: In tuberculosis group, mean serum CD4 and CDS, and pleural mean CD4 values were higher when compared to pneumonia group. Additionally, in tuberculosis group plevral CD4 value was higher than the serum CD4. Contusions: In conclusion plevral CD4 measurament may have a role in the differential diagnosis of pleural effusion due to tuberculosis or pneumonia.
