Abstract

Objective: The role of tumour markers analyzed in pleural effusion. Methods: In this study, it was investigated pleural fluid and serum CEA, CA-19-9, CA15-3 values were measured in 80 patients with pleural effusions which their mean age were 52.85±2.15 and, the role of these determinants in pleural effusions. The cases were devided into two groups as malign and benign. Results: In benign pleural effusions (n=57) mean P (pleural effusion) CEA 2.85±1.22, S (Serum) CEA 4.17±1.09, in malign effusions (n=23) CEA-P 66.92±26.23, CEA-S 28.05±11.43 were found. There was a statistically differences between two groups P and S CEA levels (p<0.05). In benign pleural effusions, mean CA19-9-P and CA19-9-S were found as 11.82± 6.23; 15.93± 3.60; in maling effusions CA19-9 –P, CA19-9-S were found as 24.26± 9.04, 33.32±18.66, respectively. There was not statistically differences between two groups P, S CA19-9 levels (p>0.05). In benign pleural effusions, mean CA15-3 –P is 18.73± 2.28; CA15-3-S is 33.15± 3.25; in maling effusions CA15-3-P is 105.84± 25.02, and CA15-3-S is 97.90± 22.86. There was a statistically differences between two groups P, S CA15-3 levels (p<0.05). Of the tumor markers, the highest specifity of pleural fluid values is CEA-P (98%), the others are CA19-9-P(%96), CA15-3-P(%92), respectively; their sensitivity are CEA-P(39%), CA15-3-P(32%), and CA19-9 P(21). Conclusion: CEA and CA15-3 could be used to determine the differences between malign and benign pleural effusions together with the other diagnostic methods and, if tumor markers can be added to the pleural sitology as single or their combinations, the diagnosis could raise.
