Abstract

Malignancies originating primarily from the renal pelvis are uncommon and adenocarcinomas constitute only 1% of all these tumors. The literature up to 2003 includes 95 cases of primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis. These tumours resemble intestinal tumors in morphology and are generally seen in elder patients with hydronephrosis, infection and urolithiasis. Chronic irritation of the renal pelvis seems to play an important role in its pathogenesis. A case with primary adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis is presented and the clinical and pathological aspects of the disease are reviewed.
