Abstract

Introduction: Ureteral fibroepithelial polyp (UFP) is a rare benign primary tumor of mesenchymal origin. UFP may involve the renal pelvis, ureter, bladder or urethra. These fibroepitelial polyps may cause urinary obstruction. A 17-year old man, complaint left flank pain together with intermittant attacks of hematuria episodes during last 6 months. Intravenous urography (IVU) revealed a filling defect in the upper left ureter and left hydronephrosis. The left retrograde ureterogram (RU) was attempted after a normal cystoscopic examination. RU confirmed a filling defect in the upper left ureter. The patient was operated on through left flank incision. There was a palpable mass 3 cm distal to the left ureteropelvic junction. The polypoid mass were completely excised and end to end anastomosis of ureter was performed. The patient was discharged on post-operative day 5. Primary neoplasms of the ureter are extremely rare. They are characterized as epithelial polyps, which usually are malignant, and rare mesodermal polyps, which almost always are benign.
