Abstract

The aim of the archaeological excavations carried out in 2016 at the “Northern Tower” of the acropolis of Olba is to obtain evidence for the defense systems of the site. The traces of the walls around the acropolis had partly been located in previous surveys at Olba. The work at the Northern Tower is important for being the first archaeological excavation on the walls of the city. All the coin finds discovered at the Trench K.I.1.2016 of the Northern Tower belong to the reign of Constantius II and points to the use of the defense system during the Late Antique Period supported by other archaeological finds. The coins are typical examples of their time, bearing the portrait of the emperor on their obverse. On the reverse is a scene depicting the emperor carrying two labarums or a Roman soldier fighting his enemy and the inscription FEL TEMP REPERATIO. The mint marks of the coins found at Olba could be identified to belong to mints of Siscia and Constantinopolis. These coin finds from Olba indicate Roman administrative and military efforts to cope with the revolts and disorder caused by the Isaurian raids over the region during the reign of Constantius II

Özet

Olba akropolisinde 2016 yılında "Kuzey Kulesi" olarak adlandırılan yapıdaki arkeolojik kazılar kentin savunma sistemini aydınlatmayı amaçlamaktadır. Daha önceki yıllardaki yüzey araştırmaları sırasında kentin sur duvarlarının toprak üstündeki kalıntıları olabildiğince izlenerek, kaydedilmiştir. Kuzey Kulesi çalışmaları ise Olba'nın savunma sistemini aydınlatmaya yönelik ilk kazı olması bakımından önem taşımaktadır. K.I.I.2016 olarak adlandıran açmada yapılan kazılarda ele geçen sikkelerin tümü II.
