Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine students and teachers' opinions on the mathematics-oriented epistemological beliefs of 9th and 10th grade students. The case study pattern which is one of the qualitative research methods has been used in the research. The study group of the research comprised 28 students which studying and 41 math teachers which working in high schools in the center of Sivas. For the selection of students in this section, a easily accessible situation sampling within teleological sampling method was used, whereas the teachers were selected making use of a maximum variation sampling method. As a data collection tool in the research; two separate semistructured interview forms were prepared for teacher and students. A content analysis method was used, making use of the QSR NVIVO 10 software package, for the analysis of qualitative data. As a result three main themes were constructed within the context of mathematicsoriented epistemological belief, being: cases in which students believe that learning mathematics depends on the amount of effort they put into it, and the reasons behind this belief; cases in which students believe that learning mathematics depends on ability, and the reasons behind this belief; and cases in which students believe in the existence of only one correct way of learning mathematics, and the reasons behind this belief. An analysis of the opinions of the respondent students and teachers opinions revealed that students believe that learning mathematics depends on effort and that there is only one truth, and partly believe that ability to learn depends on ability. And further, that students and teachers shared similar opinions.
