Abstract

It was a particular trait of the USA to emerge as a nation and attain the characteristics of a state. It was very peculiar of the US to have become an empire and be able sustain it. This trait, called exceptionalism, renders the US considerably different from the previous empires. Economic hegemony prevailing after the 1880s was buttressed by the political and military supremacy that came into being at the end of the Second World War. This domination transformed the US into a global super power after the demise of the Cold War marked by the collapse of the Soviet Union. This article defines the differences and similarities of the US’ supremacy in the comparison with the British and Ottoman Empires. However, the rapid economic growth of Asian countries in the last three decades; the political, military and financial implication of ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the latest global financial crises have led to the questioning of the super power role of the USA and of the Western hegemony that lasted over the past five hundreds years.
