Abstract

Aim: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PCMP) is a form of heart failure caused by depression of left ventricular systolic function that occurs in women during pregnancy or within a few months postpartum. Ten patients were examined clinically in this study. Material and Method: Ten patients suffering PCMP were examined retrospectively on basis of history, clinical status and echocardiographic findings. The age of the patients ranged between 16 and 44 years. The mean age was 24 years. All patients suffered dyspnea as an early symptom. Four patients underwent sectio (S/C) while the rest had vaginal delivery. Five patients had ejection fraction (EF) of 30%. Eight patients had end diastolic diameter of 5.6 cm while 2 cases had 5.0 cm and 5.4 cm, respectively. Results: Three of the 5 cases with left ventricular end diastol diameter 6.0 cm were considered to be candidates for heart transplantation while one of the rest was rehospitalized after discharge due to cardiac decompensation. The case 8 was development to sudden death in following clinical. Conclusion: Prognose of PCMP may in part be related to the recovery of the left ventricular function and normalization of the left ventricular dimension. Patients with extremely large LV dimensions must be under close follow-up due to refractoriness to medical treatment
