Abstract

Aim: The aim of the present study is to assess various imaging modalities for salivary gland pathologies in order to enable dentists performfaster and more reliable radiological selection criteria in diagnosis and treatment planning. Material and Method: Our study comprised 37 patients referred to Ankara University Dentistry Faculty. Different radio graphic techniques (ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT), sialography) were performed for diagnosis on the basis of data obtained from patient complaints and clinical examination. Results and Conclusion: Our results revealed that sialography was a reliable method for the investigation of ductal systems. However, magnetic resonance imaging, computerized tomography and ultrasonography were found to be useful for determining whether the lesions are extra or intra glandular, estimating the nature of the lesion and assessing the relation of the lesions .with surrounding tissues. Although it is accepted that MRI is superior to the other methods in assessing lesions of salivary glands, our results supported that ultrasonography and CT images were more diagnostic in Warthin tumors, lipoma and sialolithiasis. According to the our results, MRI was found to be more diagnostic in differentiating whether the lesion is extra or intra glandular, in determining the nature of the lesion and in assessing the relationship between the lesion and surrounding tissues. CT was found to be more successful in determining whether the lesion is extra or intra glandular.
