Abstract

Aim: The objective of this study was to evaluate the standard of root canal treatment performed by undergraduate dental students at the faculty of dentistry in Ondokuzmayis University, Faculty of Dentistry, radiographically. Material and Methods: Records of dental patients after root canal treatment were examined. A total of 106 endodontically treated teeth with 260 roots were evaluated. Periapical radiographs were used to assess the technical quality of the root canal filling. The length of each root canal filling was categorized as acceptable, short and overfilled based on their relationship with the radiographic apex. Density and quality of the root canal filling was evaluated based on the presence of voids in the root canal. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U analysis were used to determine statistically significant differences between adequacy of root canal filling in each group of teeth according to its location, position and curvature. Results:89% of roots had fillings of acceptable length, while 8% were short and 3% were overfilled. Inadequate fillings were found more in posterior teeth compared to anterior teeth (%40) (p<0.01), besides no statistical difference was found between maxillary and mandibular jaws (p>0.01). Conclusion: The technical quality of root canal treatment performed by undergraduate dental students was found 89%. However in posterior teeth this success ratio is not achieved unfortunately. Specialized clinical supervision and increasing the time of training at the preclinical and clinical levels should improve this quality.
