Abstract

Aim: The aim of the present study was to assess the in-vivo antimicrobial activity of 5% sodium hypochlorite and 2% chlorhexidine gluconate which used as root canal irrigating solutions in teeth with pulpal necrosis. Material and Method: Forty infected-teeth being diagnosed as pulpal and/or periapical pathosis of thirty two patients, were included in our study. Teeth were equally and randomly divided into 2 groups. Each group was subjected to one of these following irrigation-solutions; 5 % sodium hypochlorite, 2% Chlorhexidine gluconate. All coronal restorations and carious lesions were removed completely, following the preparation with standardized-access-cavity. Sterilized-paper points were used to take samples from root-canals, and then they were incubated in test tube at 37 °C for 72 hours. Same procedure -concerning canal irrigation was repeated at 72 hours; and subsequently microbiologic samples method was also repeated. To statistically antibacterial efficiencies between two different irrigation solutions, a chi-square test was used. Result: The result of this comparative study indicates NaOCl and chlorhexidine have good potential for endodontic usage. The results were analyzed with a chi-square test statically and difference between the groups were not significant (p>0.01).
