Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of Turkish version of Corah Dental Anxiety Scale (C-DAS) in children, adolescents and adults, and to determine the frequency of dental anxiety in Turkish population. Method: The sample consisted of 925 children aged 8-12 years old and their parents randomly chosen from 15 schools in Adana. A total of 3614 subjects aged 8 to 66 years old (886 adolescents and 1803 parents) were analyzed. C-DAS, STAIC-S and STAIC-T scales were filled in by the children at school and the questionnaire which included demographic information and scales were sent home for the parents and sibling (age range 13-19) to complete. Results: Mean age of the children was 9.9±1.4 (range 8-12), of the adolescents 16.1 ±2.6 (range 13-19) and of the adults 36.8±6.7 (range 21-66) years, respectively. The correlation coefficients of C-DAS with STAI-S and STAI-T ranged between 0.42 and 0.55 (p<0.001 for all). The internal consistency demonstrated by Cronbachis alpha was 0.81 and the test re-test reliability coefficient was 0.71. The results of the factor analyses indicated that the four items of C-DAS had factor loadings ranged between 0.73 to 0.81 in the total 3614 subjects. This one factor accounted for 64.0% of the variance (eigen value-2.58). Similar results were found in all age groups. Overall 26.2% of the population were had dental anxiety (total score >12). The frequency of high anxiety was 11.4% in children, 13.3% in adolescents and 7.8% in adults respectively according to C-DAS (total score >15). Conclusion: The findings suggest an adequate factorial structure and concurrent validity of the scale for all age groups. The frequency of the dental anxiety seems to be high in our popula¬tion and it is changing by gender, education level and age.
