Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the short term in-vivo effects of a new fluoride-releasing light cure resin (Ortho-Coat, Pulpdent Corporation, WatertoWn, USA) on dental plaque accumulation around brackets during fixed orthodontic treatment. Material and Methods: This study was conducted on 20 adolescents (14 females, 6 males) who have been undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment for 1,5 years. After oral hygiene instructions, plaque index, gingival index, pocket probing depth, bleeding index with a calibrated periodontal probe and gingival crevicular fluids (GCF) were collected. Two groups were randomly assigned with 10 patients in each. First group required application of Ortho-Coat and the second group composed the control group. All measurements were repeated at the first month. Cytokine levels in GCF were evaluated by ELISA. Results: Intra group comparisons declared significant differences in clinical indexes (p<0.01), but cytokine levels demonstrated no significant difference. Inter group comparisons revealed significant differences in clinical indexes (p<0.01), while there was no significant difference in TNF-and IL-6 levels. Conclusion: The fluoride-releasing resin had no adverse effect on the accumulation of dental plaque and inflammatory cytokines around the orthodontic brackets. Current results mainly depend on the motivation of the orthodontic patients provided by oral hygiene instructions.
