Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study is to assessment the effect of post-traumatic stress disorder on dental anxiety of the pediatric oncology patients who completed their antineoplastic treatment. Subjects and Methods: Forty-seven children aged 9-13 years who have completed their antineoplastic treatment at Ondokuz Mayı s University, Department of Pediatric Oncology and their parents formed the study group. 47 healthy children and their parents of the same age and gender and social background were included study as a control group. While Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder was measured using Postiraumatic Stress Disorder Reaction Index, the Corah Dental Anxiety Scale was used to measure the dental anxiety. Variance analysis, Student t- test, regression analysis and spearman correlation was used for statistical analysis. Results: Dental anxiety of pediatric oncology patients was found higher when compared to that of the control group (p<0.01). The relationship between the pediatric cancer diagnosis age, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (r=0,721, p= 0.0006) and dental anxiety were found statistically significant. (r=0,574, p= 0.0003). Dental anxiety was found similar between genders in all groups. Both study and control group, there was a correlation between dental anxiety of children and their parents. Conclusion: As a result we conclude that, collaboration with a children psychotherapist is suggested to reduce the dental anxiety of the paediatric oncology patients who completed their antineoplastic treatment and are suffering from high stress levels after trauma.

Özet

Amaç: Bu çalışmada, antineoplastik tedavileri I tamamlanan pediatrik onkoloji hastalarının post- l travmatik stres bozukluğunun, dental kaygı üzerine j etkisinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır.
