Abstract

The most important component of ground source heat pump systems, which use earth as a heat source, is the pipes of earth-coupled heat exchangers that are located in the underground. The dimensions of pipes (e.g. diameter, and length) and pipe material selected for settlements of these pipes in the underground are the most significant characteristics of ground source heating and cooling systems, and effect considerably installation cost of heat pump system. In this study, the pipe length of a ground heat exchanger was determined for different heat exchanger configurations (i.e. horizontal, and vertical), pipe materials, and heating and cooling loads. It was concluded that using vertical configuration gives shorter pipe length compared to horizontal configuration.
