Abstract

Turkey’s dependence on imports for approximately 99% of its natural gas transforms the high energy consumption required for pressure adjustment at Natural Gas City Gate (RM/A) stations into a critical resource efficiency issue. Currently, preheating requirements at these stations are primarily met by natural gas boilers; this continued reliance on imported resources necessitates the urgent investigation of renewable alternatives. This study focuses on a RM/A station in the Buca district of Izmir, the province with the highest amount of such stations in Turkey. To reduce the consumption of natural gas used for pre-heating, namely "fuel gas", the integration of a photovoltaic (PV) system and an air-source heat pump was evaluated from both technical and economic perspectives. Two different scenarios were analyzed using real operational data. In the scenario including the entire usable roof area, it was determined that a PV system with a capacity of 343 kWp can generate 471 MWh of electricity annually. When integrated with a heat pump, a reduction of approximately 29% in fuel gas consumption can be achieved. Furthermore, while the PV system fully meets the facility's electricity demand outside the heating season, the surplus energy provides additional economic benefits when utilized in an electric vehicle charging station. Economic analysis indicates that this investment can achieve a payback period of 6 years and is economically viable. In the alternative scenario involving limited roof area, the fuel gas savings were restricted to 9.6%, which was deemed economically unfeasible. Consequently, this study demonstrates that renewable energy-supported hybrid systems hold significant potential for reducing operational costs and enhancing energy and resource efficiency in RM/A stations.
