Abstract
ABSTRACT This study theoretically investigates the piston-driven mechanical power transmission system of round baler machines, which increase logistics and storage efficiency in modern agricultural mechanization. The main focus of the study is to analytically determine how the piston-crank-connecting rod mechanism supports the rotational compression process, unlike the traditional linear pressing method. In the modeling process, a medium-sized machine with a nominal capacity of 15 tons/hour is used as a reference, considering Turkey's annual baler potential of 30-40 million tons and the roughage needs of the livestock sector. The kinematic and dynamic analysis of the system is performed using a "slider-crank" geometry. Calculations revealed that achieving a bale density of 200 kg/m³ requires a pressing force of approximately 200 kN, resulting in a torque of 18-24 kNm on the crankshaft. It was assumed that instead of directly pushing the material, the piston provides rotational compression by increasing belt and chain tensions to approximately 1 MN. While the theoretical power requirement was calculated as 40 kW, the necessary engine power was determined to be 50 kW when mechanical and hydraulic losses are included. S355 structural steel is preferred for the crankshaft and connecting rod, which are critical components in terms of structural reliability. The system is aimed to have a fatigue life of 10⁶-10⁷ cycles. In addition, the theoretical number of machines that would need to operate simultaneously to meet the total baling demand throughout Turkey has been calculated to be approximately 2,770. All obtained data is converted into a parametric solid model at the millimeter scale, creating a technical basis for finite element analysis (FEA).
