Abstract

Since there is a thermal interaction of the human body with the environment, the maintenance of the body temperature in the required range and thermal comfort are strongly related with the environmental effects. Physiological control mechanisms of the body act against variations of thermal comfort factors to maintain body temperature and heat balance. Shivering and vasoconstriction among these reactions are the natural control mechanisms of the body protect from cold. In this study, Two-Node Transient Energy Balance Model" is used for the time rate of changes of the core and the skin compartment temperatures under conditions that deviated from the neutral body situations. By the use of this model, four different conditions were considered in the analysis as: 1)both shivering and vasoconstriction effects exist together, 2)no shivering effect, 3)no vasoconstriction effect, and 4)none of the shivering and vasoconstriction effects exist. For each condition, reactions of the body control mechanism were examined, the effects of vasoconstriction and shivering on heat loss, the core and skin temperatures and thermal discomfort are comparatively presented and analyzed.
