Abstract

In 25 patients with hypertension and 15 healthy individuals were investigated with regard to relationship between hypertension and glutathione peroxidase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, arginase enzyme activities, malondialdehyde, creatine, urea, triglycéride, cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein, hemoglobin, hematocrit levels. In the patients with hypertension, glutathione peroxidase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activities and hemoglobin levels decreased (p<0.05), although malondialdehyde (P<0.005), triglycéride, cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein (P<0.05) levels increased significantly. Whereas, no differences were found in arginase activities, creatine, urea, hematocrit levels (P>0.05). As a result of hypertension, oxidative stress could be increase and antioxidant defense mechanisms could be insufficient.
