Abstract

This study was designed to investigate the association between Meniére's disease and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo in patients suffering from vertigo. Forty-eight patients with the diagnosis of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo underwent pure tone audiometry, electronystagmography, transtympanic ECochG for endocochlear pathologies, and simultaneous recording of ABR for retrocochlear pathologies. Eleven patients, whose duration of vertigo attacks were variable, were diagnosed as Meniére's disease with a summating potential/action potential ratio of more than %35. Eight out of 11 patients had normal hearing. The other 3 patients had vertigo attacks and hearing loss related to Meniére's disease. Association between Meniére's disease and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo is a clinical entity, which can be encountered in vertigo patients. Thus, vertigo attacks of short duration in patients with Meniére's disease should not be related directly to a Meniére's attack. This attitude will prevent unnecessary interventions in the patients with Meniére's disease.
