Abstract

Mondini's dysplasia is a developmental anomaly of the otic capsule characterized by cochlear malformation with dilation of the vestibular aquaduct, vestibule and ampullar ends of the semicircular canals. Congenital bony abnormalities of the inner ear result from an arrest in development during varying stages of organogenesis. These anatomical deformities may result in a connection between subarachnoid space and the middle ear resulting in recurrent episodes of meningitis. Typically these malformations are associated with some degree of hearing impairment, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) otorrhea and recurrent meningitis. A 22-year-old female patient with two episodes of meningitis wthin a 2-month-period, right otorrhea, rinorrhea and Mondini's dysplasia is presented.
