Abstract

Objective: In this prospective study 44 patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BBPV) were treated by Epley's manoeuvre and pretreatment and posttreatment symptoms were compared to determine clinical effectiveness of this manoeuvre. Methods: We applied modified Epley canalith reposition manoeuvre in 44 patients with symptoms of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and positive Dix-Hallpike test. We followed up the patients for a month and examined them with Dix-Hallpike manoeuvre once every week. Results: At the end of one month, symptoms of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo ceased and Dix-Hallpike tests became negative. Symptoms completely disappeared (90.8%) in 40 patients. Two patients had partial remission (4.54%) and two patients had no remission (4.54%). There was no sig-nificant relation between mean symptom scores before treatment and age and duration of symptoms (p>0.05). However, there was a significant decrease in severity scores of symptoms and signs after treatment (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study supports the usefulness of Epley's manouevre for the treatment of BPPV. This manoeuvre is also favorable because it does not require that patients be frequently visited and it obvi-ates surgery and unnecessary consumption of drugs.
