Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of teaching the topic of simple electric circuits through simulation and laboratory practice techniques to prospective primary school teachers on their comprehension levels comparatively. The study is an experimental study and it is based on static group pretest, post-test design. The sample of the study consists of 57(simulation group 28, laboratory group 29) prospective teachers in the 2nd year of Primary School Teaching in the Faculty of Education at Abant Izzet Baysal University during 2012-2013 the academic year. With the aim of evaluating the levels of comprehension of prospective teachers, an achievement test was developed based on a pilot study, contained 112 prospective teachers. Item analysis, independent samples and dependent samples t tests, and a covariance analysis were conducted in order to analyze the data appropriately. The findings showed that there were significant differences between two groups’ success levels before and after the practice. Specifically, it was found that prospective teachers in the group in which simulation technique was applied got higher achievement scores significantly than that of those who were in the group in which laboratory practices were applied. Based on the current findings, it was concluded that simulation technique might be more effective than laboratory practice for teaching simple electric circuits to prospective teachers
