Abstract

Aim: Brucellosis is one the infections encountered all over the world and which is diagnosed in children uncommonly. Herein, we present patients with brucellosis and review the literature. Methods: The clinical and laboratory fındings of twenty-one cases who had been diagnosed as brucellosis were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Duration of symptoms was shorter than a month in 14 cases and was between 1 to 2.5 months in 7 cases. Symptoms were fever (15 patients), arthralgia (12), anorexia (7), malaise (6), night sweat (6), weight loss (6), headache (4), abdominal pain (3). The clinical findings were monoarticular arthralgia in large joints (12 patients), hepatomegaly (10), splenomegaly (8) and generalized lymphadenopathy (2). Regarding the laboratory tests, increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate (13 patients), anemia (9), leukopenia (4), leukocytosis (3), thrombocytopenia (3), pancytopenia (1), positive C-reactive protein (16), increased transaminases (9) were the nonspecific test results. Wright test (20 cases) and/or positive blood (4/5 cases) or bone marrow cultures were the diagnostic tests. Arthralgia, fever or abdominal pain were the unique admission complaints in 8 patients. Of these patients, 4 cases had no significant laboratory test result other than positive Wright test. A patient has a significant splenomegaly and pancytopenia. Conclusion: Brucellosis can not be ruled out in the absence of its characteristic clinical features such as fever, arthritis, hepatomegaly and nonspecific tests such as leukocyte count, ESR and CRP might not be beneficial for the diagnosis of brucellosis.
