Abstract

Background and Aim: The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the effect of treatment of MB2 canal in maxillary first molar teeth on the success rate of root canal treatment using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: Images from 1125 patients who admitted to the hospital for dental procedures between 01/01/2017 and 01/01/2019 were examined. 259 maxillary first molar teeth with endodontic treatment were included in the study. Inadequate images that canals cannot be visualized properly were excluded. Selected teeth were classified in accordance with presence of MB2 canal, condition of treatment of MB2 canal, gender, tooth side, age and formation of apical periodontitis in mesiobuccal (MB) root. Data were analysed with Chi-square test. Results: The prevalence of MB2 canal was observed as 67% in all selected maxillary first molar teeth. However, MB2 canal was filled only 15% of cases. The ratio of formation of apical periodontitis in MB roots with unfilled and filled MB2 canal was 54% and 19% respectively. Moreover, statistically significant difference was observed between treatment of MB2 canal and formation of apical periodontitis in MB root (p<0.05). Conclusion: Although the prevalence of MB2 canal is common, treatment rate of MB2 canal is relatively lower that leads unsuccessful endodontic treatment outcome. CBCT images may help the clinician to find MB2 canals to improve the quality of root canal treatments.
