Abstract
This study examines the socio-economic transformation of eight provinces (Aksaray, Karaman, Kırıkkale, Kırşehir, Konya, Nevşehir, Niğde, and Yozgat) within the scope of the Konya Plain Project (KOP), located in the interior regions of Türkiye, in the context of the spatial reflections of global economic and political processes during the 1990-2024 period. A review of the relevant literature reveals that concepts such as agglomeration economies, increasing returns, and center-periphery models are prominently featured, and that regional development is addressed not solely in terms of quantitative growth but also in conjunction with issues such as the spatial rebalancing of labor, capital, and infrastructure. In the empirical application of the study, changes in the provinces’ shares of national GDP and population were calculated using a “redistribution index” approach. The findings reveal significant performance disparities among the KOP provinces rather than a homogeneous distribution. Specifically, Aksaray province emerged as a new center of attraction in the region, recording a 201% increase in its GDP-to-population index over the 1990 2024 period; whereas Kırıkkale province experienced a sharp decline in both demographic and economic weight, thereby falling among the “left-behind places.” The results indicate that the gap between KOP provinces overshadowed by a major metropolitan center such as Ankara and those that have generated their own gravitational pull through transportation corridors and industrial clusters has been progressively widening. This pattern presents a picture consistent with the regional development literature, despite the presence of certain institutional supports. The study underscores the necessity of moving beyond uniform policy prescriptions and instead accounting for the unique technological and demographic dynamics of each province in addressing regional inequalities.
Çalışma kapsamında, bölgesel eşitsizlikleri gidermek amacıyla tek tip politikalar uygulamak yerine, her ilin kendine özgü teknolojik ve demografik dinamiklerinin dikkate alınması gerekliliği vurgulanmıştır.
