Abstract

This narrative review examines the theoretical development of the concept of hope within the context of medical social work and the use of hope therapy as a clinical intervention tool. Hope, a concept from positive psychology, is considered not a passive emotion, but rather a cognitive skill set that can be learned and developed, involving the will and determination to plan and progress towards achieving goals. Literature studies show that in life-threatening or chronic conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and kidney disease, high levels of hope increase psychological resilience, reduce depression, and support treatment adherence. For medical social workers, hope is a powerful resource that enables clients to develop resilience during illness and crisis processes. When integrated with the ecological perspective of social work, hope can be developed beyond individual work through social connections and other community support mechanisms. Hope therapy, a short-term and semi-structured intervention, can be used as a psychosocial support model to support patients' treatment adherence, quality of life, and recovery processes, especially in hospital settings where time and resources are limited. It can be implemented with a simple and understandable framework, integrated with other clinical approaches and methods, and through group work. This study includes intervention guidelines from the literature for professionals working in the field of medical social work.
